iPhone 7: Pros and Cons

If you’re planning to buy an iPhone 7 then chances are you’re reading this because you can’t decide or you’re doing research before buying. There’s not much visually to set apart the new model from its predecessor, so it all comes down to the less obvious but numerous improvements. You want to be sure that it’s worth it first, so to help make that decision for you this article will provide a list of the pros and cons of the iPhone 7.

Pro: The new camera

One of the biggest improvements with the new iPhone is its camera. The phone features a 7MP FaceTime camera and a 12MP rear camera, capable of shooting 4K 2160p videos at 30fps. The camera is 60 percent faster and 30 percent more energy efficient than the camera on the iPhone 6S, along with a new quad LED flash that is 60 percent brighter. Apple have previously been criticised for featuring cameras that were inferior to the competition, but it looks like they have improved with the new model. Considering how popular smartphone photography is, this is a very welcome improvement.

Pro: Water resistance

A brand new feature, Apple have announced that the new iPhone comes with IP67 certification. This means that you can take your phone underwater at a depth of 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. While there aren’t many people likely to purposely take their phone underwater, it does mean that any accidental water damage, like dropping it in a pool or putting it through the washing machine, may not render the phone completely useless. A minor, but very handy feature to have!

Pro: Force touch home button

Another brand new feature, this one can actually feel quite bizarre at first. ‘Force touch’ is a new technology to the iPhone that means the face of the phone feels completely flush when locked and the home button can’t be pressed. This means no more pocket dialling! It’s equipped with Touch ID like before and is now pressure sensitive, which other apps can make use of in creative ways.

Con: No headphone jack

Probably the most controversial design decision, removing the headphone jack was a very bold move on Apple’s part. Now there is only one input socket on the iPhone and everything has to go through that. This means you must now use a Lightning to 3.5mm headphone adapter to use your headphones. The problem is, you therefore cannot charge your phone and use the included headphones at the same time. This could be a deal breaker for some.

Con: Only 2GB RAM

There is no RAM improvement over the iPhone 6S. If you buy the 7S you get 3GB, but this is still far below the competition. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S6, which is a year older than the iPhone 7, came with 4GB of RAM! Less RAM means the iPhone is more limited in the amount of apps that can be open and running simultaneously. While memory is managed differently in iOS compared to Android, Apple is notably lagging behind the competition in this department.

Con: It’s not all that different

All things considered, Apple’s latest model feels more like an incremental improvement than a revolutionary upgrade. Almost all of the new features fall under the ‘nice to have’ banner, but none really stand out as must-haves. If you simply must have the latest model then you likely won’t regret upgrading, but if you’re undecided then you could stand to wait until Apple announces the next model!
